Gasaway Family from Oconee County, Pickens County, Anderson County, South Carolina and Cobb County, Georgia

Wesley Clayton Gasaway was my grandfather. He died of pneumonia at the young age of 38, leaving a widow with eight children.
I have conducted extensive research into the Gasaway/Gassaway family, Rice family, and Burkett family.

My research is free to share; however, I request if anyone quotes from my research, please supply my name as the researcher.
My research was not taken from any website but was done the old fashioned way before the internet.
Cobb County, Georgia has an excellent genealogy room (Georgia Room)in the public library which is located in the city of Marietta, Georgia.
I poured through books, census records, and other documents while holding a full time job. The hours spent in this project can never be regained; therefore, it is important to me and my posterity that I be recognized for my hard work.

FYI:  The Gasaway/Gassaway/Gazaway families of North America was extensively researched by Kenneth Rutherford and his wife, Anna Clay Zimmerman Rutherford. Their book is titled–
“Genealogy of the Gassaway Family.” It was published many years ago. I purchased this book and spoke to Mrs. Rutherford sometime in 1990. My ancestor Phillip N. Gasaway is not in the Rutherford’s book, and Mrs. Rutherford stated she had never seen any documents regarding Phillip N. Gasaway and had no idea of his parentage.

James Hewitt, From Spartanburg, to Ludville, Georgia

The following was researched, compiled, and written by Connie Chumley Stringer, with special thanks from the research of Patrick and Doris O’Shields.

The purpose of this post is to identify one James HUET who was named as a member in the records of the Friendship Baptist Church which is located in Pickens County, Georgia. The church was originally located in Cherokee County before the county lines were redrawn.

This James Huet (Hewett, Hewitt) appears to have been the same James Hewitt from Spartanburg, South Carolina, who was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church.  He was sent out from Friendship Baptist Church as a missionary to help establish churches. Evidently, the first and only church he helped establish was the Friendship Baptist Church in Pickens County, Georgia.

A SPECIAL THANKS to Patrick and Doris O’Shields for finding this article  which appears on the findagrave.com website.

FRIENDSHIP BAPTIST CHURCH OF LUDVILLE      (Pickens County, Georgia)

A meeting house site in then-Cherokee, now Pickens, was lot 23, 23rd district, 2nd section now private property and site of old Friendship Cemetery. The first church was a log cabin meeting house which was dismantled and moved to GA Hwy. 53 and Pinhook Road in land lot 14. In 1904, this property was deeded to the deacons, Book N, page 116, Pickens County, Georgia.

Quoting from the original document constituting the Friendship Baptist Church:

Record of the origin process and proceedings of the Primitive Baptist Church of Christ known by the name Friendship Baptist Church. The members whose names were underwritten met in convention agreeable to a previous agreement at a meeting house on Scarecorn Creek in Gilmer County, Georgia on Saturday before the fourth Sunday in June 1846 and they agreed to a presbytery from the primitive Baptist Churches to examine our faith and constitute us a church it found in order, July 25, 1846.
We the following members met to wit:  JAMES HUET, H. Wm. Jones, John Guyton, Elizabeth Hightower, M Hightower, Jane Phillips and Hessa Guyton; attended by Peter Kuykendall and Nathaniel Adams, ordained preachers, and Thomas Rice, deacon from Salacoa Church. And after due examination constitute the presbyters certificate follows:
“We the undersigned presbyter the eldership of Salacoa Church in compliance with a petition from members on Scarecorn have aligned the 25th day of July 1846, and did constitute a Baptist Church of the above named members on primitive principles on the following creed.
Signed
N. Adams                     (Rev. Nathaniel Adams)
P. Kuykendall               (Rev. Peter Kuykendall)
T. Rice                          (Thomas Rice, Deacon)

George Washington Hewitt b. 1846 (grandson of James Hewett/Huet)

(Although James Hewitt was sent out to establish new Baptist churches from his home church of Friendship Baptist Church in Spartanburg, SC, it is highly unlikely he ever held the position of pastor due to his inability to “keep his house in order.” This is evidenced by one or more of his daughers having illegitimate children–George Washington Hewitt and Laura Hewitt. Laura Hewitt appears in the 1860 Census as part of the family of James Hewitt and his wife, Elizabeth. Laura was named after Mrs. Laura Kuykendall, the wife of Rev. Peter Kuykendall. )

FOUR DOORS DOWN from James Hewitt is Rev. Nathaniel Adams.

Rev. Nathaniel Adams was one of the ministers who was part of the constituting of the 1846 Friendship Baptist Church. He died in 1857, and records show he is buried at Liberty Baptist in Ranger, Georgia, where I guessed James Hewitt is buried, and I placed that information on another blog maintained by me. (That information was copied and placed on message boards without my name credited to the research.)
It is just as likely that James Hewitt is buried at the Friendship Baptist Church. Many very old graves are located in the woods near the church cemetery.

Rev. Peter Kuykendall was the son of Rev. James Kuykendall who served as pastor of Buck Creek Baptist Church in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, from 1844 until 1846.

James Huet/Hewett/Hewitt, who helped constitute the Friendship Baptist Church in Ludville, Georgia, appears to be the same James Hewitt who left Friendship Baptist Church in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
An explanation of the location of this church is necessary so as to show its proximity to James Huet/Hewitt’s homestead.  Ludville is very near Gordon County. It is NE of Ranger, Georgia, and about five miles from Fairmount, Georgia.  James Huet/Hewitt definitely lived in this exact area.
James Huet/Hewitt, Peter kuykendall, and Nathaniel Adams were near the same age and probably traveled together to Georgia. Additionally, the Rev. Peter Kuykendall’s father was the same Rev. James Kuykendall, who pastored Buck Creek Baptist Church.
It is noteworthy to mention Friendship Baptist Church in Spartanburg was surely the namesake for the Friendship Baptist Church in Ludville, Pickens County, Georgia.

Chumbler and Chumney are from the Chumley Family.

Source:  Georgia Confederate Pensions Applications, 1879-1960

Mrs. Lucinda Chumbler stated the following information on 7 May 1901, that she was the widow of William Warren Chumbler, b. 1820, in Pickens County, South Carolina and died 10 September 1886, in Hall County, Georgia, and that he served in the Confederate Army, Co. B, 2nd SC Rifles.
Lucinda stated her maiden name was HEAD, and she was born 1822 in Pickens County, South Carolina, and that she married William Warren Chumbler in Pickens County, South Carolina.
Three sworn testimonies were presented as proof Lucinda Head Chumbler was the widow of William Warren Chumbler:

(1) Tollie Dean swore that she was the sister of William Warren Chumbler and knew that Lucinda Head married her brother, William Warren Chumbler. Tollie Dean was living in Oconee County, South Carolina.

(2) Martha Powell swore under oath that she attended the wedding ceremony of Wm. Warren Chumbler and Lucinda Head. She further stated the ceremony was performed by Magistrate Robin Stewart. Martha Powell was living in Oconee County, South Carolina at the time of her deposition.

(3) .James M. Chumbler completed a character reference for Lucinda Chumbler. This document does not establish the relationship between James M. Chumbler and Lucinda Head Chumbler.

Some conclusions I have reached but have not proven at this time:

In 1830, Wade Hampton Chumbler was living in Pendleton District, South Carolina.  I believe but have not proven Wade Hampton Chumbler was the father of William Warren Chumbler and Tollie Chumbler Dean.

Wade Hampton Chumbler appears to have been a descendant of Hardy Gilstrap because when Hardy Gilstraps’ will was probated, Hardy Gilstrap awarded a part of his estate to Wade Hampton Chumbler.

Thompson Chumbler or Chumley, and his brother, William Chumbler or Chumley,  jointly owned land in Spartanburg County, South Carolina,  Thompson moved to Pickens County, South Carolina, because his young daughter, Polly, was severely beaten by two young men in the Littlefield family of Spartanburg. Polly Chumley sued (1812) the Littlefields and was awarded 500 pounds. It appears Thompson and his family moved from Spartanburg to Pendleton so as to escape further incidents.

By 1850, William Chumbler/Chumbly/Chumley (brother of Thompson) appears to have moved to Marion County, Alabama, with his son, Hardy Chumbly. Evidently, Hardy Chumbly was brother of Wade Hampton Chumbly.  I am guessing William Chumley’s wife was the daughter of Hardy Gilstrap.

(I believe this William Chumbly was the brother of Thompson Chumley.)

OBITUARY        Mrs. Mary E. Green
After a brief illness, Mrs. Mary E. Green died at her home, near Retz Post Office, on Feb. 14, 1906, in the fifty-second year of her age. She had been in delicate health for several years, but the immediate cause of her death was an attack of pleuro-pneumonia, to which she succumbed, despite the efforts of skilled physicians and tender nursing by loving hands. She was much affected by grief for a devoted grandson, Archie D. Blake, who died of pneumonia a few days prior to her death. After appropriate services by the Rev. B. W. Remenge, the remains were laid to rest at 2 PM on the 16th in the family burying ground on the Green estate. The deceased was a daughter of the late J. Madison Lewis of this county and was twice married. Her first husband was the late Joseph Green, by which marriage there are three children–Mrs. J.P. Blake, Boadman (sic) C. Green and Mrs. J. William Marchant. The second husband, George P. Green, was himself ill of pneumonia at the time of her death, but is now convalescent. By the last marriage there is a son–C. Calvin Green.  Mrs. Green was a consistent member of the Westville Christian Church, and was highly esteemed by a large circle of neighbors and friends. She was a kind-hearted woman and a good neighbor, ever ready to nurse the sick, befriend those in trouble, or respond to the appeals of the needy. She has left to those who mourn her the heritage of a good name and the blessed example of a well-spent life.

A NOTE FROM CONNIE CHUMLEY STRINGER:
Some members of the Brown family who descend through Joseph Sephes Brown’s second wife, Lecta Barrett Brown have stated Annie Mae Barrett and Lecta Barrett were first cousins.  This information appears to be incorrect. Many Barrett researchers find no proof or evidence to support the claim Annie Mae Barrett was Lecta Barrett’s first cousin. Annie Mae Barrett was a descendant of John Barrett and Rebecca Stanton, who settled in Hall County, Georgia, having come from Greenville, South Carolina.
John Barrett was the son of Revolutionary War soldier, Reuben Barrett and his wife, Hannah Doty.

Lecta M. Barrett was the daughter of Andrew (Andy) J. Barrett and India and the grand-daughter of Wade H. Barrett and Priscilla (I believe her maiden name was Harden). Wade H. Barrett was born in North Carolina.

He appointed his son, John M. Carleton Executor of his Estate.
Stephen signed his name and applied his Seal.  When he did so, he signed his surname Carleton, not Carlton.

Stephen Carleton’s Will reads in part:

…I give and bequeath to my loving wife Susannah Carleton during her natural life or widowhood all my lands and household and kitchen furniture to freely disperse as follows that is to say as the children marries to give them in proportion with them that have married if it can be done without material injury to the maintenance of the balance with the exception of Isom Carleton my son who have had his portion with those that have married and at the general division of my estate those of my children that have not had any portion of my estate that is my children they are first to have as much as those that are married has had before any division takes place and my wish and will is for my daughters as they come of age till they marry to remain on my lands with their mother till they marry if they agree and sons likewise till they marry if they can agree all while single to work to the advantage of the family in working the land and if they after the youngest child Sarah Carleton comes of age believe that it will be more to the advantage of the Legatees and with the consent of my wife Susannah Carleton they may sell the land and equally divide my estate for every child of mine to share and share alike and if no division till after my wife’s death all my children to share and share alike…

Notes for Susannah Childs:
Based on the provisions in Stephen Carleton’s Will, Susannah could live
on the family’s property if she chose to do so, and at her death, a division of the property was to be made for all “children to share and share alike.”

This is proven by the settlement of Stephen Carleton‘s Estate, 12 August 1857.

Calhoun Times April 9, 1925

On Monday night, March 22, 1925, the death angel visited the home of Mrs. Will Baker and carried away the spirit of her loving mother, Mrs. Brown, at the age of 76.   She was a consistent member of the Baptist Church.  She suffered much, but prayed to God to give her strength to bear her sufferings.  She leaves to mourn her loss, a husband, five sons and two daughters, and several grandchildren.  Over yonder in the City, where the streets are paved with gold, free from sorrow, death and sickness, safely in the Shepherd’s fold.  Yes, we’ll miss you, mother, for we loved you, tongues can’t tell, but Jesus loved you better, and called you home to dwell.  You shall never be forgotten, never from our memory fade; loving hearts will linger around the grave where you are laid.

The children of John Carleton and Essie Shirley were supplied to me by John C. Carlton via email.  John stated, “I currently live in Spanish Fort, Alabama. The only other living direct descendant of Lisbon Buford Carlton, Harriet Hughes Cullens, lives in Marietta, Georgia.  After I sent the message, I located the dates of death for the other members of the John Monroe Carlton + Essie Louvenia Shirley family.  I also have an original period photograph that was in a folder labeled “Carlton Family Reunion” (attached). Although I have period photographs for most of all of the John Monroe Carlton family (that were identified by my aunt –Essie Sue Carlton – a daughter of Lisbon Buford), I’m having trouble identifying individuals in the reunion photo. I’m also having trouble finding any “stories” about the family.  Any help would be appreciated. I’m just trying to put something together to pass along to my children.”

Lewis Family of Sharp Top Mountain

When the Lewis family arrived in Georgia, they were counted in the 1850 Census in Roswell District, Cobb County.  From there they moved into Gordon County and from there to Pickens County, Georgia, in the Sharp Top Mountain District.
Sharp Top Mountain lies in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Pickens County, Georgia.  It stands 2.450 feet high and is shaped into a point.  Luke E. Tate said the mountain is “steeple-like-shaped” (History of Pickens County).
Many have said that those who lived at Sharp Top in the old days were hearty stock who braved the cold wind and the harsh conditions.  It was during these hard times the Lewis family moved to Pickens County.

Generation No. 1

1.  Harbard Lewis was born Abt. 1801 in North Carolina1, and died Aft. 1880 in Pickens County, Georgia.  He married (1) Martha in North Carolina.  She was born Abt. 1805 in North Carolina, and died Aft. 1850 in Georgia.  He married (2) Julia Gravely. She was born Abt. 1835 in Virginia.
In the 1840 Census, Wilkes County, North Carolina, one Harbert Lewis is listed.  The number of males and females in his household appears to be nearly the same as those listed with Harbard Lewis in the 1850 census. No proof has been found thus far which identifies Harbert Lewis in Wilkes County, North Carolina, as the Harbard Lewis who removed to Georgia.  It seems very possible they were the same person.

Harbard and his family removed to Cobb County, Georgia sometime between 1845-1850 after the birth of Andrew who was born about 1845 in South Carolina.  In 1850, Harbard’s occupation was listed as Labourer. In 1870, Harbard was living alone in Fairmount, Gordon County, Georgia.  In the 1880 Census, it was reported that Harbard could neither read nor write and had married, Julia, after the death of Martha.

Children of Harbard Lewis and Martha are:
+    2    i.    William2 Lewis, born Bet. 1827 – 1829 in North Carolina; died in Georgia.

The application for these funds can be found at the Georgia Archives.
